Happy Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is coming up soon; next Wednesday! Valentine's Day is one of those holidays that people either seem to love or hate. Some of the complaints I've heard against the holiday is that it pushes needless consumerism, it glorifies romantic relationships above other relationships, and it puts down those that are single.
Certainly the critiques are worth considering, but as with many things, I personally believe that what matters most about Valentine's Day is the attitude with which you approach it. I think Valentine's Day works best when it is viewed as a gentle reminder to appreciate all the people we love in our lives. In the business of our day to day lives, it can be easy to forget to tell the people we love just how much they mean to us. This doesn't have to be done with expensive gifts. It can be as simple as making time for a phone call, or finally going on that coffee date with a friend, playing with your kids, helping your spouse with some chores, actually verbalizing that "I love you."
Valentine's Day doesn't have to be complicated, or expensive, or even - depending where you're at in life - romantic. All it needs to be is genuine and intentional.
