Love at First Sight?

Have you ever heard those stories about "love at first sight"? Two people meet, they lock eyes, the world tilts, and by the time they've finished introductions they know they're talking to the person they're going to spend the rest of their life with.

Now, I'm not going to sit here and tell you that something like that could never, ever, not-in-a-million-years happen. Hey, anything is possible. But I am going to caution you that genuine "love at first sight" is rare, and you shouldn't count on being the exception.

The reason I say this is rare is because that genuine love is a lot more than just an emotional response, and it typically takes some time to develop. You see, love isn't really sweaty palms and butterflies in your stomach. It isn't anxiously waiting on that next text, or daydreaming about how your next conversation will go. Not that any of these things are bad; they just don't necessarily equal love.

So what does real love look like? It looks like patience. It looks like kindness, and self-sacrifice. It looks like honesty, trust, and forgiveness. It looks like commitment, even when things are hard. How many of these traits spring up the first time you look at someone? Yeah, not very many.

So what does this mean for your future relationships, especially if you feel like you've made an immediate connection with someone? It means, move slow. Don't jump all in when you're just starting out. Take some time to really get to know the person you're dating so you can decide if that connection really is love, or if it was simply attraction. Trust me, you're relationship won't suffer for starting at a slower pace (and if it does, that might not have been a great person to have a relationship with in the first place).
